In a law school appearance on Wednesday, Justice Anthony M. Kennedy managed to sidestep most questions about his majority opinion striking down restrictions on corporate campaign ads in the days before elections.

But Kennedy did answer a question that was an apparent reference to President Obama’s criticism of the opinion, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Kennedy’s “courtly and humorous” address at Pepperdine University’s School of Law included criticism of harsh sentences in the United States. He also responded to questions, including this one: “Does Justice Kennedy feel scolded?”

“He doesn’t,” Kennedy replied.

Kennedy also had some comments on the nature of the judicial branch of government, the Ventura County Star reports. “We’re the only branch of government to get its work done on time, thank you very much,” he said. Later, he offered another comparison. “We’re the only branch of government that must give reasons for what we do,” he said.
