An Indiana University law professor is proposing an unusual way to help troubled kids: Send them to boarding school in Africa.
Law professor Kevin Brown is leading a group of Indiana professors backing a school in the West African nation of Ghana, according to the Associated Press and the Indianapolis Star. "The core idea is to pull kids out of an environment where they cannot thrive and put them in one where they can," Brown told the Star.
Brown’s group says Ghana is one of the region’s more stable countries. Donations would fund the building of the school, and state money designated for urban districts could cover classes, room, board and travel.
One stumbling block is the problem of legal liability. A similar school in Kenya serving Baltimore children operated for seven years, but it was shut down because of fears it would be targeted by terrorists.
