Law Students Juggle Legal Internships with Liquor Sales, Dog Training
Many law students who secured government internships in Virginia this summer are working for free.
The Virginian-Pilot surveyed several government offices, and found that summer jobs for law students are unpaid at prosecutors’ offices in South Hampton Roads, Norfolk, Chesapeake and Portsmouth, and some are unpaid in Virginia Beach. Internships with area public defenders and judges are also unpaid, the story says.
The newspaper talked to some law students who were working as legal interns and in paid jobs as well. Diane Maydosz, a 3L at the College of William and Mary, works as a dog obedience trainer. University of Virginia law student Katie Beye worked last summer in a judicial internship and as a liquor store clerk.
“Legal interns in government jobs this summer are learning a painful message,” the story says. “The law doesn’t always pay.”
