A woman accused of killing the girlfriend of a former Chicago sports star needs a makeover before her trial begins, her lawyer asserts.

Lawyer William Hedrick says his client, Marni Yang, is being denied the rights granted to male inmates, who are allowed biweekly haircuts, according to the Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Sun-Times. Hedrick says his client needs to color her graying hair and to lose some of the length, which now reaches to her back. The lawyer also wants his client to be allowed to wear make-up.

“Her appearance has declined,” Hedrick told a judge in suburban Lake County. “She looks frankly like a crazy woman.”

Judge Christopher Stride denied the request and will decide today whether to delay the trial to allow for an appeal of the issue. Stride said he doesn’t think Yang looks unkept, and her behavior in court has been exemplary. “If having gray hair means you are crazy, then I am the craziest person in this court,” he said.

Yang is accused of killing the pregnant girlfriend of former Chicago Bear Shaun Gayle.
