Pedestrian fatally injured as SUV driven by lawyer runs backward 100 feet from court parking lot
A veteran Massachusetts criminal defense attorney was so distraught she had to be hospitalized Wednesday after her SUV accelerated backwards out of a Brockton courthouse parking space and crossed multiple embankments and roads before fatally striking and dragging a pedestrian on a sidewalk.
State police are investigating to see if the vehicle was defective and have not filed any charges against Cohasset practitioner Valerie Semensi, according to the Boston Globe (sub. req.), CBS Boston and Wicked Local Cohasset.
The vehicle traveled about 100 feet before coming to rest against a vacant building near an area where people congregate for court-ordered community service assignments.
The victim, 66-year-old John Buckley, was hospitalized after the 8 a.m. accident, but was pronounced dead at 8:40 a.m.
Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz said an investigation is ongoing.
