Two U.S.-based law firms are poised to become the first to open law offices in South Korea.

Ropes & Gray and Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton were the first and second law firms to receive approval Monday to open offices there, the Wall Street Journal’s Deal Journal blog reports.

Clifford Chance was the third.

Partner William Kim of Ropes & Gray will head the firm’s practice in Seoul. He said the firm already does antitrust and intellectual property litigation work for large Korean companies and handles government enforcement and white-collar criminal matters. He anticipates there will also be a substantial amount of mergers and acquisitions and finance work.
