A lawsuit claims the government illegally spied on 16 lawyers representing Guantanamo detainees and seeks records of the wiretapping.

The lawsuit was filed yesterday by the Center for Constitutional Rights, the Los Angeles Times reports.

CCR attorney Shayana Kadidal says his organization requested records about the spying in January 2006, but the Justice Department and National Security Agency did not release all of them in the time specified by the Freedom of Information Act.

A center press release says the Justice Department provided 85 pages of unredacted documents and two redacted documents, much of which had already been made public, and withheld 84 pages and an e-mail. The NSA produced only two documents, according to CCR.

The plaintiffs include CCR staff attorneys Gitanjali Gutierrez and Wells Dixon as well as law professors and partners at prominent law firms, according to a case summary.
