Less than half of Americans approve of the way the U.S. Supreme Court is doing its job, according to a new Gallup poll.

Forty-six percent of those polled said they approve of the Supreme Court’s job, down 5 percentage points from last year and 15 percentage points from 2009, according to a press release and Politico.

This year’s 46 percent rating is the second lowest since 2000; the lowest approval rating was 42 percent in 2005.

The drop could be due to a broader distrust of government in general, Gallup says.

Republicans and Democrats have similar approval ratings of the court (50 percent and 46 percent respectively), but Democrats’ approval has plummeted in the last few years. In 2009, 75 percent of Democrats and 49 percent of Republicans approved of the Supreme Court’s job.

A different poll question found that 63 percent of Americans say they trust the federal judiciary “a great deal” or “a fair amount,” tying the low Gallup measured in 1976.
