Among attorneys in Texas, opting to wear cowboy boots to court isn’t particularly unusual.

So a longtime court ban on the popular footwear by a municipal judge in the small town of Lakeway incited ire when it suddenly made the news last week, even though it had apparently never been enforced, according to the American-Statesman.

“Oh my goodness, you would have thought I was renaming the state … New Jersey or something,” Judge Kevin Madison told the newspaper yesterday, after reversing the ban effective Saturday, Sept. 18.

Earlier, attorney George Lobb had said he might sue over the boot ban, and other lawyers throughout the state supported his negative opinion of the sartorial rule in e-mail comments, another American-Statesman article reported.

“Talk about un-Texan,” said senior Travis County District Judge Jon Wisser. “I have worn boots to the courtroom every day since I became a judge … in 1975.”

Newspaper columnist John Kelso also spoke out against the boot ban in another article.
