Las Vegas lawyer Anthony “Tony the Tiger” Lopez Jr. has received a reprimand for running a radio ad that “grossly misstated the law.”

The Nevada Supreme Court reprimanded Lopez for a 10-second Spanish-language radio ad that said, “If you have had an auto accident, by law you have the right to receive at least $15,000 for your case.” The Las Vegas Review-Journal and the Associated Press had the story.

Lopez had said the ad was intended to inform the public about minimum insurance coverage for drivers, the stories say. But an order by the supreme court said the ad “misled the public into believing that they had a right to $15,000 if they were involved in a car accident regardless of the merits of their case.”

Lopez spent $19,500 on the ad, and now he’s on the hook for a like amount of money under the supreme court order. He will have to run another public service announcement informing the public of the insurance coverage minimum, and the campaign must be “equal to the $19,500 spent” on the misleading ad, according to a disciplinary recommendation adopted by the high court.

Any solicitation for business in connection with the ad is not allowed.
