Desks say a lot about the people who work there, feng shui experts say. So why does Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley have giraffe figurines on her desk?

Coakley explains in a Boston Globe story about desks and the things people put there. Coakley has always liked giraffes, and they help inspire her. “No two have the same spots, and they stick their neck out,” she told the newspaper. Giraffes also helped break the ice with children when she interviewed them as chief of a child abuse unit in a district attorney’s office in the 1990s.

Coakley is also inspired by a photo of Eleanor Roosevelt on her desk, along with a quote from the first lady: “You must do the thing you think you cannot do.”

According to feng shui expert Peg Donahue, “The content of your space is a mirror image of what is going on within you.” If you want to increase the positive energy around your desk, she told the Globe, you should take everything off and put things back on it “mindfully.”
