When it opened on May 2, 1927, the Stevens Hotel—today, the Chicago Hilton and Towers—was the world’s largest, with 3,000 guest rooms. However, it had predictably fallen on hard times by the time of the Wall Street crash of 1929. The Stevenses eventually loaned thousands of dollars from Illinois Life to the hotel.
