A few years ago, Porta-John Industries came out with a top-notch portable lavatory complete with hardwood floors, a skylight, a working sink and a ceramic toilet that flushes.

When it came time to name the new model, Porta-John’s CEO was inspired by his longtime lawyer, Bruce Freitag.

“We just figured, ‘Who’s the classiest guy we know?’ and thought of Bruce,” says Earl Braxton, who sells the Freitag Model 4848E Comfort Station (PDF) for $5,800.

Freitag, since retired, may have the dubious honor of being the only lawyer in America to have a portable toilet named in his honor—at least officially. According to Braxton, whose business is headquartered in Utica, Mich., Porta-John sells about 2,000 Freitags a year.

“We sold one to the president of Haiti,” Braxton says. “We’ve sold them in six different countries. All kinds of sheiks use them. It’s for very high-end uses.”

Freitag, who’s from Wanaque, N.J., did not return phone calls for comment. But according to Braxton, Freitag doesn’t own one of the comfort stations named in his honor.

“He didn’t need [one],” Braxton says.
