Authorities in Boston have unveiled the Real Time Crime Center, a new camera network that helps authorities not only identify suspects but provide police with potentially lifesaving information about what is happening on the scene.

“This is going to be the real nerve cell of operations in the city,’’ says Commissioner Edward Davis, standing at the center of a small, square room that houses the $500,000 intelligence hub. Until recently, it was an office foyer, reports the Boston Globe.

Only a few other cities, including Houston, New York City and Memphis, Tenn., have such comprehensive camera systems.
