By a 9-1 vote, a Congressional ethics panel has recommended that U.S. Rep. Charles Rangel, D-NY, be censured for ethics violations.

It is now up to the full House of Representatives to decide whether to accept the punishment recommended by the House ethics committee, which it is expected to decide after Thanksgiving, reports the New York Times.

If imposed, as appears likely, the censure–in which the lawmaker, now 80, would be required to stand in the well of the House while the speaker of the House reads the censure resolution–would be the first time the penalty has been applied since 1983, the newspaper notes.

Rangel was found guilty earlier this week of ethics violations concerning his fundraising, failure to pay taxes and unreported income on financial disclosure forms required of members of Congress.
