Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

Justice Sonia Sotomayor will have shoulder surgery Tuesday for a broken left shoulder suffered in a fall April 16.

Sotomayor, 63, will have a procedure known as reverse total shoulder replacement surgery, according to a Supreme Court press release. The National Law Journal, Reuters, Bloobmerg News and the Associated Press covered the announcement.

Sotomayor will wear a sling for the next few weeks and curtail her activities, according to the press release. She will undergo physical therapy for several months, and is expected to regain full shoulder function.

According to Reuters, Sotomayor’s condition is not expected to affect her ability to vote on cases or to affect the court’s workflow.
