The attorney general of Grenada has resigned over a letter he sent on official letterhead seeking leniency for his stepson from the Pinellas-Pasco State Attorney in a Florida criminal case.

Media reports in Grenada say Attorney General Jimmy Bristol’s resignation was accepted today by the prime minister of the Carribean island, reports the St. Petersburg Times.

Bristol’s stepson, Emmanuel Ganpot, who went to college in Florida, was to have begun serving a sentence of nearly six years in 2003 for dealing drugs, but he fled the country instead. He now faces likely additional time when he is sentenced next month, after being apprehended in 2008.

In his letter, Bristol acknowledged his stepson’s misconduct and said he did not condone it, but said “we all err from time to time and should not have our lives completely destroyed by one slipup,” the Times reports.
