TAR 1.0 provides a strong foundation but is still too complex

The first generation of predictive coding or TAR tools were added or “bolted-on” to existing review platforms to assess the immense volumes of data subject to a litigation, to streamline and reduce the cost of document review. Although the first generation of tools allowed organizations to gain greater efficiencies reviewing and producing relevant documents, the tools were too rigid and complex, and even more complicated to explain.

Users redefine TAR and how it is applied across the EDRM

Broad based use of TAR has not been reached in the legal community, but for many organizations they have already begun to see the additional benefits of TAR beyond its customary uses. TAR aids information governance, compliance, risk assessment and litigation readiness, ultimately giving greater control to organizations and their legal teams.

TAR 2.0 – beyond the basics

As end user adoption and judicial support continue to grow, TAR continues to evolve becoming more comprehensive, verifiable, and transparent.

The next wave of enhancements expands beyond review efficiencies, giving users complete visibility over their projects throughout the entire process. With TAR 2.0, one of the most significant gains on the front-end is the degree of seamlessness between a traditional review and a TAR project. A reviewer using TAR conducts a review as he/she would typically conduct a linear review project. To the reviewer, it’s another review project. To the case manager, there are significant changes to the backend – progress and production reports are easily gathered and metrics generated immediately for decision-making purposes.

Organizations endeavoring to use TAR 2.0 solutions should not only consider the overall purpose of TAR and its defensibility, but also understand the key elements that are imperative to successfully adopting and maximizing the benefits of TAR 2.0.

A dynamic landscape demands dynamic tools

Evolution is a must for technology to meet the demands of the changing litigation landscape. It’s no longer enough to have a TAR solution that augments the human review process, it must enhance it. When organizations invest people and dollars into TAR, organizations expect a return on their investment. With TAR 2.0 and its extended abilities to go beyond cost savings and improved efficiencies, it is likely acceptance will become more pervasive, sparking a new cycle of technology enhancements.

Advancements in TAR solutions do not replace the human interaction required for review. Proper planning, assembling and training of the appropriate team remain critical. At the most basic level, TAR 2.0 allows legal teams to reduce costs and deliver a better result with greater efficiency and transparency.

Daegis understands this evolution and its next generation TAR tool Acumen was intentionally designed to meet the needs of all today’s users, without special training or processes. Acumen is part of the Daegis Edge eDiscovery review platform, delivering greater ease of use, eliminating the reliance on seed sets and providing the scalability required to tackle the biggest cases. Adopting Daegis Acumen as your TAR system will help you realize greater efficiency and lower costs with more predictability and confidence.
