Updated: After a massive hunt, police shot and killed a man suspected of killing one Miami-Dade cop and wounding three others with a high-powered rifle.

Shawn Sherwin LaBeet was armed and wearing body armor when police surrounded him at a pool in a Miami condo complex and shot him dead, witnesses told the Miami Herald.

LaBeet fired at police earlier yesterday after they stopped his Honda Accord, killing officer Jose Somohano. LaBeet is the half brother of Ishmael LaBeet, who was implicated in eight slayings at a St. Croix resort in 1972, according to another Miami Herald story. Ishmael LaBeet disappeared until 13 years later when he hijacked a plane to Cuba and he remains a fugitive.

Policed wrongly identified the suspect in early news accounts as 30-year-old Kevin Wehner. He told police his wallet was recently stolen and it appears LaBeet was using his identification. LaBeet’s girlfriend gave police Wehner’s name, Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Alvarez said in a press conference.
