Barnes & Thornburg has brought its attorney count in Chicago to 85 by after hiring five new laterals in during the past month.

The National Law Journal reports that there is still room for another 35 lawyers in the Indianapolis-based firm’s Chicago office. These are the latest hires:

• Heather Fesko from McGuireWoods as a health care department partner.

• Mary Innis and J. Manuel Herrara from Loeb & Loeb as an intellectual property partner and associate, respectively.

• Mark Kindelin from Neal Gerber & Eisenberg as a corporate partner .

• J. Eric Guth from Winston & Strawn as a corporate partner .

“Each one of these folks who moved over are people who have very nice books of business, nice practices, but they don’t fit in their larger firms anymore because of the expense factor, the high billable rates at the larger firms,” Mark Rust, who manages the Chicago office, told the National Law Journal.

Last August, Barnes & Thornburg decided to cut its 2009 summer associate program in Chicago because the firm was finding it relatively easy to find associate hires.

Barnes & Thornburg has been expanding rapidly in recent months, having opened offices in Minneapolis last month and Columbus, Ohio, and Atlanta in April.
