Calwalader Practice Head & Sidekick Defect to Steptoe & Johnson
A former chairman of the environmental practice group at Cadwalader Wickersham & Taft is leaving the firm, along with a senior environmental attorney, to join the New York office of Steptoe & Johnson.
Both and Andrew Perel and Daniel Lavoie join the 500-lawyer Washington, D.C.-based firm as partners, reports the New York Law Journal.
“Mr. Perel will also become the resident member of the management committee of Steptoe’s New York City office and that office’s representative on the firm’s executive committee,” states a Steptoe press release. It quotes Steptoe litigation chair Steve Fenell as saying that Perel is the “go to” lawyer for environmental litigation in New York.
“Cadwalader, which has laid off around 130 lawyers due to the slowdown in its core securitization practice, has seen a few high-profile departures in recent months,” the legal publication notes. “On Monday, the firm’s Beijing office head, Mark Roppel, joined the Shanghai office of Allen & Overy, and, in April, reinsurance litigation practice head Lawrence Brandes joined DLA Piper in New York.”
