Always do a good job, because you never know who may be watching you.

That tried-and-true advice helped one law student springboard from his job as an assistant manager at a dry cleaner in Roslyn Heights, N.Y., to an internship at a Manhattan-based personal injury firm, reports Newsday. Today, John Zervopoulos, 36, is managing attorney of the Woodbury office of that firm, Salenger Sack Schwartz & Kimmel.

Almost a decade ago, his work ethic and customer relations skills caught the attention of one of the customers of Manor French Cleaners—partner Robert Sack.

“He kept his cool,” says Sack. “He kept his patience. I saw him handle everything in the greatest fashion.” That included, Sack notes, routinely carrying customers’ dry cleaning out to their cars without expecting a tip.

So when Sack learned that the super assistant manager was also a law student, he offered him an internship at his firm, the newspaper recounts. Zervopoulos also kept his dry cleaner job for another two years, until 2001, when he graduated and became an associate at the law firm.

“I always like to keep busy,” he says.
