The federal judiciary is preparing recommendations on the courts’ use of artificial intelligence.

Judge Sidney Thomas of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals at San Francisco said on Thursday that the judiciary’s AI task force aims to share its final guidance by the end of the year, according to a story by Bloomberg Law. Thomas, who chairs the group, also noted that its interim guidance already addresses judges’ use of the tools.

“Publicly, I think people have focused on the use in chambers, but actually I think the more important and significant use may be in court operations,” Thomas reportedly said.

The federal judiciary began looking at these issues after two federal judges revealed in October 2025 that AI use by their staff led to error-riddled opinions.
