Lockheed Martin’s General Counsel James B. Comey announced plans yesterday to join Westport, Conn.-based hedge fund Bridgewater Associates.

Comey, 49, who has served as senior vice president and general counsel since September 2005, will remain at the aerospace contractor through June 24 and will “continue to serve on Lockheed Martin’s executive management team through the summer to ensure a smooth transition,” according to a Lockheed Martin press release.

Comey’s new title will be management committee member, not general counsel or chief legal officer, Bridgewater spokesman Alexei Nabarro said in a statement e-mailed to Corporate Counsel.

Prior to his position at Lockheed, Comey served as deputy attorney general of the United States, where he gained notoriety when he rushed to then-attorney general John Ashcroft’s hospital bedside to help his ill boss ward off White House officials seeking reauthorization of a warrantless wiretap program.
