Merchant & Gould has opened an office in New York City with two lawyers and a patent agent from the now-defunct Darby & Darby firm.

A Minneapolis-based intellectual property boutique with more than 100 lawyers on its attorney roster, the Merchant firm saw the collapse of Darby & Darby last month as an opportunity to add to its offerings, according to the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal.

Partner Adda Gogoris, who focuses on pharmaceutical and biotechnology patents, will be in charge of the new office. Two of her former Darby colleagues, partner Dianna Goldenson and patent agent Andrew Larson, will also work there.

“The addition of a New York office gives us access to great new clients and talented new lawyers, while providing a fantastic platform for servicing our existing East Coast and European clients,” says CEO and managing director Randy King in a news release.

“The past two years have not been kind to many IP boutiques,” King adds. “And we take no pleasure in the setbacks of so many friends and colleagues.”

However, the 100-year-old Merchant firm has done well despite the difficult economy by “staying true to its guiding principles,” he states. They include gradual growth to reinforce existing expertise, hiring the best available talent and focusing on value and excellent client service.
