Many lawyers today already have personal laptop computers, scanners, smart phones and software that helps them bill their time and manage cases and documents.

For those who don’t, now is the time to gear up and to get up to speed on such modern-day legal technology, according to Randy Kessler, an Atlanta lawyer, and Steven Best, an Alpharetta, Ga., lawyer and consultant. Kessler, who has a leadership role on the Law Practice Management Committee of the ABA Section of Family Law, also says that another big plus is having a plasma TV on the wall of your law office that can be used to show documents to clients or revise documents jointly at settlement conferences, writes the Daily Report, a Georgia legal newspaper.

The two offer specific suggestions in the article about equipment and software that is useful to lawyers. Besides helping attorneys declutter their offices and clear their desks, the right technology also makes it easier to keep documents at hand and keep up with client matters, even when you’re traveling, they point out.
