Only about 8 percent of midlevel associates surveyed by the American Lawyer expect to move to in-house positions in the next five years, while 43 percent expect to stay with their current firm.

Nearly 16 percent predicted they would be a nonequity partner, while 11.5 percent thought they would become an equity partner, according to a chart published by the Am Law Daily. Another 15.6 percent said they would still be an associate or working in an of counsel capacity, the chart shows.

Four percent said they would be at another law firm, 4 percent predicted they would be working in government, and 2 percent said they would not be practicing law. Nearly 33 percent said they didn’t know what they would be doing while nearly 6 percent chose “other” as their future occupation.

A story published last week by the Am Law Daily reported on whether associates thought they were likely to remain at their firm in a shorter time span—two years from now. Asked to rate the likelihood of being at their firm in two years on a 1-to-5 scale, the average was a 3.79, the highest score in six years.
