The ABA has announced that Dr. Asha-Rose Migiro, the deputy secretary-general of the United Nations, will give the keynote address Saturday evening at the opening assembly of the ABA Annual Meeting.

While the annual meeting got under way Thursday, the opening assembly is the primary ceremonial event for all attendees. The event will start at 5:30 p.m. in the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf=Astoria. After the opening assembly, the president’s reception will be held at the Museum of Modern Art.

In her post, Dr. Migiro works closely with U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in managing U.N. administrative operations. She also represents the secretary general at conferences, diplomatic functions and ceremonial events. Prior to her appointment on Feb. 1, 2007, Migiro served as the first female minister of foreign affairs for the Republic of Tanzania since that nation gained independence in 1961. She holds legal degrees from universities in Tanzania and Germany.
