Dead animals outside a Miami courthouse don’t appear to be road kill.

Animal remains are often found in boxes and bags outside the Richard E. Gerstein Justice Building, Local10.com reports. The widespread belief is that the remains are part of a ritual performed by practitioners of Santeria or voodoo.

Animal offerings are sometimes used by those seeking favor with certain spirits, voodoo priestess Amelia Ingrid Llerria told the broadcast station.

She performs ceremonies involving animal offerings, but only after obtaining a permit.
