Bingham McCutchen has laid off 17 San Francisco area support staffers.

San Francisco managing partner Geoffrey Howard said the layoffs in his office amounted to 5 percent to 10 percent of the staff, the Recorder reports. Twelve staffers were laid off in San Francisco and five in the Silicon Valley.

“We are constantly assessing our operations in all of our 13 offices,” Howard told the Recorder. “That’s something we need to do in order to stay competitive.

“As an example, we don’t send and receive nearly as many faxes as we did five years ago,” he said. “And that has an impact on staffing and on how we organize ourselves.”

The firm recently saw the losses of some partners in its Bay area offices—at least two in February, three in March and two in April. But Howard told the publication the first quarter financial results were the best ever for the firm and its San Francisco office.
