A La Jolla, Calif., divorce lawyer has been arrested on charges that he tried to hire others to kill his wife.

Lawyer Steven Robert Liss was arrested Monday and charged with solicitation to commit murder, false imprisonment and spousal battery, according to the Los Angeles Times and San Diego Union-Tribune.

San Diego police spokeswoman Monica Munoz told CBS8.com that Liss’ wife, Karen, contacted police to report fears that her husband wanted to harm her. “The investigation revealed that on multiple occasions over the past several months, Liss sought the help of others to have his wife murdered,” Munoz said.

Liss’ law license has been suspended twice since he began practice in 1987, the Union-Tribune says. The story cites state bar documents showing several complaints have been filed alleging that he failed to do legal work for clients.
