Updated: A utility worker has stumbled across the remains of a child about a quarter mile away from the Orlando home of Caylee Anthony, the 3-year-old girl who has been missing since June.

The child’s mother, 22-year-old Casey Anthony, has been charged with first-degree murder for her daughter’s death even though the remains have never been found. Officials said they did not know if the remains found today were those of Caylee, the Palm Beach Post reports.

The utility worker picked up a bag and a skull rolled out, according to Todd Black, a spokesman for Casey Anthony’s defense attorney, the Orlando Sentinel reports. Residents said duct tape was wrapped around the skull, the story says.

Mandy Albritton, a spokeswoman for EquuSearch, one of the groups searching for the girl, said the area where the remains were found was not searched in September because it was submerged in water, the Sentinel story says. In November the group couldn’t access the site because it was fenced off.

Caylee’s grandmother reported the girl missing in July and said Casey Anthony’s car smelled like death. Prosecution documents indicate that someone in the Anthony home had done Internet searches for “neck breaking” and “household weapons” and “chloroform.”
