Consumers have brought a flurry of lawsuits against the nation’s largest snack, breakfast, and beverage companies, accusing them of failing to warn of serious health risks.
Bloomberg Law reports that the lawsuits have brought intense pressure to these companies, even as federal and state regulators bear down on the sector.
The lawsuits accuse major “ultra-processed food” producers of failing to warn consumers about health risks associated with their products. U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has characterized UPFs as “poison.”
Several studies have linked UPF consumption to weight gain and increased risk of developing diet-related chronic diseases. According to Bloomberg Law. The United Nations Children’s Fund identified the foods as a key contributor to rising childhood obesity rates worldwide.
