The editor of a college newspaper that used the f-word in an editorial headline has retained a lawyer for advice on his First Amendment rights.

The editorial protested a police officer’s use of a Taser against a student who wouldn’t stop asking questions at a forum featuring Sen. John Kerry. The headline read, “Taser This … F— Bush.” A school supervisory board will decide this week whether to fire editor-in-chief J. David McSwane, the New York Times reports.

McSwane has hired Denver lawyer David Lane, who represented former University of Colorado ethnic studies professor Ward Churchill. Lane has filed a suit alleging Churchill was fired for his political views rather than misconduct, the Rocky Mountain News reports.

Churchill raised hackles when he wrote an essay comparing the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks to Nazi leader Adolf Eichmann. The school is seeking dismissal of the Churchill suit, the Denver Post reports.
