A pair of father-and-son Florida personal injury lawyers have been disbarred less than two years apart, and the most recent incident allegedly involved the father using the son’s bar card to visit the son’s mother in jail.
The Florida Supreme Court disbarred Larry Powers Jr. in January 2025, with leave to seek readmission after five years, over accusations of using clients’ money to fund his own personal expenses, the Miami Herald reports.
The same month Powers Jr. was disbarred, he and his son, Larry Powers III, attempted to visit the son’s mother at a jail in Orange County, Florida, according to the discipline complaint filed against Powers III that does not say why the woman was behind bars.
The duo tried to enter the jail saying they represented the woman, but Powers Jr. was denied entry because he did not present a bar card. Shortly afterward, Powers Jr. tried to enter the jail again, presenting his driver’s license and his son’s bar card to a sheriff’s deputy, the complaint states.
When the deputy noticed the names on the driver’s license and the bar card did not match, Powers Jr. and Powers III were removed from the site, according to the complaint.
Additionally, the bar sent Powers III three requests to respond to the charges, which he did not. The Florida Supreme Court approved his disbarment in August. Neither Powers Jr. or Powers III immediately responded to ABA Journal requests for comment.
