Unhappily married? There’s an obvious solution—get a divorce.

But a less obvious solution might be better—separate, but stay married, reports the New York Times.

In addition to avoiding acrimony and enjoying the comfort of the status quo of coupledom, remaining married also offers financial benefits. And, for those who aren’t eager to leap into another wedding, already being married presents a significant roadblock to new nuptials.

“There’s no advantage to getting divorced,” an unidentified woman, 39, who is the mother of two children tells the Times.

Although she and her husband are both in new relationships, lawyers advise them to stay married to avoid legal fees and health insurance issues, she says. “I feel like we could just drift on like this for years.”

There may also be financial reasons to untie the knot, though. Among them: The other spouse is dissipating assets or is simply likely to survive you, thus potentially locking in a legal right to your estate.
