The JetBlue flight attendant who jumped down an emergency chute will be able to avoid prison under his guilty plea today.

Steven Slater pleaded guilty to attempted criminal mischief charges and agreed to pay $10,000 in restitution, the cost of repairing or replacing the chute, according to CNN and the New York Daily News. One charge was a felony and the other a misdemeanor. If he completes counseling and stays out of trouble, he’ll be able to withdraw his felony plea next year and will be convicted of only the lesser charge.

After the hearing in a Queens criminal court, Slater said he was surprised by public interest in his dramatic exit. “At the end of the day, I am a grown adult and must accept responsibility for my actions,” he said. “Therefore, I am looking forward to moving forward with my life and I’m very grateful to the court for making these arrangements which allow me to do so.”
