The girlfriend of a Cincinnati lawyer charged with his shooting death is claiming self-defense, according to her lawyer.

Ryan Poston, 29, was killed on Friday, report NKY.com, Kentucky.com and Cincinnati.com. His girlfriend, 21-year-old Shayna Hubers of Lexington, Ky., has been charged with murder.

Hubers’ lawyer, Wil Zevely, said his client killed in self-defense, though he wouldn’t elaborate. “I’m not going to talk about the facts of the case, except to say that it is a self-defense case,” he told NKY.com. “The only thing she did wrong was having bad taste in men.”

Members of Poston’s family said the claim was “absurd” and Poston had been trying to end the relationship at the time of his death.

Poston launched a solo personal injury practice after passing the Ohio bar in 2011 and graduating in 2008 from Northern Kentucky University’s Salmon P. Chase College of Law. A former roommate, Matthew Herren, said Poston had a promising future.

“I always said I wouldn’t be surprised if Ryan ran for Congress at the age of 30—he was that kind of guy,” Herren told Cincinnati.com. “He was smart. People listened to him—when he talked about anything. He could speak intelligently on anything.”
