Joining an elite group of law firms that have previously announced attorney layoffs in recent months is Edwards Angell Palmer & Dodge.

Chip DeWitt, who is managing partner of the Boston-based firm, confirmed late last week that “fewer than 10” associates throughout its offices and in a number of departments are being laid off, reports the Lawyer. However, no summer associates and no one among the new class of first-year associates joining the firm this fall will be affected.

“We looked at our manpower needs and our budget for the coming year,” DeWitt says. “We are expecting it to be a fairly flat year in terms of work and realized we have an excess capacity of attorneys.”

A firm spokeswoman has not responded to a request for comment by ABAJournal.com.
