A longtime Grand Rapids, Michigan, law firm that once had then-future president Gerald Ford on the payroll is set to merge with a larger legal shop.

As of Jan. 1, the 16-attorney Law Weathers will become part of 150-attorney Varnum, MLive.com reports.

The two law firms already have offices in the same building and have worked together on a number of matters.

In addition to hiring Ford in 1946, Law Weathers also made legal history as the city’s first law firm to put a woman on its payroll, in 1951, the article says. With a history that dates back to 1855, it is currently the oldest law firm in Grand Rapids.

“We look forward to hanging a portrait of Law Weathers’ most prominent alumnus, President Gerald Ford, in our client reception area, alongside those of Varnum, Riddering, Schmidt, Howlett and the other greats from our firm’s past,” a Varnum news release says, referring to partners who have been on the marquee of the 125-year-old firm.
