An Emory University law student who had announced plans to run for a seat on the Henry County, Georgia, commission is now facing a murder charge.

Jennifer Rosenbaum, 27, is accused of starving and beating a young foster child for months before the girl’s Nov. 17 death. Rosenbaum’s 26-year-old husband, Joseph, faces child-cruelty charges, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and People magazine.

Laila Marie Daniel, 2, had been placed with the couple—who reportedly are not licensed foster parents—because of their friendship with the girl’s family.

A lawyer for the Rosenbaums tells the newspaper her clients are innocent and indicated that the child came to them with injuries at issue in the case.

“When you take in foster children, you don’t know what’s in their history,” said attorney Corinne Mull. “And you’re left with the hot potato.”

She said Jennifer Rosenbaum is “extremely distraught and dismayed at the thought she would hurt a child.”
