Friends and colleagues of a Texas criminal defense lawyer are expressing surprise at accusations that he pulled a gun on an off-duty police officer.

Lawyer John Young of Sweetwater was arrested early Monday morning and charged with aggravated assault, the Abilene Reporter News reports. He is currently in the news for representing the mother of missing Colorado City teen.

Criminal defense attorney Alex Eyssen said Young is a gentleman who is generous with his time, legal research and resources. “I hope whatever is going on with him right now is something he can get a hold of,” Eyssen said.

The newspaper interviewed Sweetwater Police Chief Jim Kelley about the allegations. According to Kelley, the officer was visiting friends for a glass of tea when he noticed a car behind the home. When the officer approached the vehicle, Young got out and began yelling, then pointed a handgun at the policeman, Kelley said.

Kelley said police didn’t do a blood-alcohol test, although Young appeared to be “intoxicated on something.”
