A dozen police dogs for the Miami Police department are getting bulletproof vests, thanks to a donor that is covering the $11,000 cost.

Miami’s new police chief, Rodolfo Llanes, announced the donation of 12 vests by a company called Pet Armor on Friday, the Miami Herald reports.

With the new donation, all but seven of the police department’s 19 dogs will have bulletproof vests, Deputy Police Chief Luis Cabrera told the Miami Herald.

Most police dogs are trained in Europe and shipped to the United States at a cost of more than $10,000 apiece, the story says. The only Miami police dog known to have died in the line of duty is a Belgian Malanois named Atlas who died when an armed robbery suspect shot him.
