A man who held his wife and several others hostage for several hours at the Kansas law firm where she worked has been sentenced to 18 years in prison.

The sentence came after Nathan Cunningham entered a guilty plea and admitted to entering the law office of David Holmes in Hutchinson in February, the Hutchinson News reports.

He held Delorah Cunningham at gunpoint for seven hours after he allowed some people to leave and others escaped. Police ended the standoff by showering the office with tear gas.

The article describes an emotional hearing, in which a crying and shaken Delorah Cunningham tells her husband, “Your lack of control and violent tendencies affected so many lives … the kids and I are in therapy, as are all your victims. I will never be the same after that day.”

Nathan Cunningham also started to read a statement but had to let his public defender finish. He accepted responsibility and said that he hoped he’d have a chance to remain a part of his son’s life.
