A mobile solution designed to help lawyers easily track billable time spent talking to clients on their personal cellphones won the Startup Alley competition at the ABA Techshow 2020 on Wednesday night.
The fourth annual competition took place at the Hyatt Regency hotel in Chicago and was the official kickoff for the ABA Techshow, which runs until Saturday.
Billseye provides a blue button that shows up when a call comes in on an attorney’s mobile phone that can be clicked to log the time. It was voted as the winner by the standing-room-only crowd. The solution is integrated with all the popular case management systems, according to the company’s co-founders.
“If you are one of the 70% of lawyers that bill by the hour and one of the 90% of lawyers that talk to clients on your personal mobile phone, you’ve got a leakage problem,” says Billseye CEO and co-founder Alcide Honoré. “The Billseye solution is very simple. It allows you to track, calculate and document client calls in real time.”

Honoré co-founded Atlanta-based Billseye with his brother Armond Honoré, the chief information officer. The company already has design and utility patents for its software, they say.
Other startups in the competition included companies focused on improving document automation, addressing the access-to-justice gap, and making it easier to draft contracts.
Despite their promise, automated timekeeping systems have struggled to deliver strong long-term success in the legal industry. The Honoré brothers say they are hopeful that their solution’s integration with other software and its singular focus will help Billseye thrive.
“There are hundreds of practice management solutions that are trying to be a Swiss Army knife,” Alcide Honoré says. “We want to be the tip of the spear.”
