President Barack Obama plans to use his executive power to require companies to report employee pay by race, gender and ethnicity.

The plan is intended to encourage companies to pay women the same as men when both are doing the same jobs, report the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal (sub. req.). It will also help the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission target companies that may be discriminating based on pay.

Companies would include the information on a form they already file on the race, sex and job groups of their employees.

The requirement expands a prior executive order requiring federal contractors to publish such information. It will apply to companies with 100 or more employees.

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the Department of Labor will publish the proposed regulation.
