The man convicted of assassinating Sen. Robert F. Kennedy in 1968 may also have tried to put a contract out on his younger brother, Sen. Ted Kennedy, in 1977.

An unidentified fellow inmate at the federal prison at Soledad, Calif., where Sirhan Sirhan was incarcerated told the Federal Bureau of Investigation that Sirhan offered him a million dollars and a car if he would agree to handle the hit, reports the New York Daily News.

The inmate said he declined, states an FBI report in Ted Kennedy’s file, which has been released following his death.

It isn’t clear how serious a threat Sirhan, who is described by the Daily News as mentally unbalanced, presented to Ted Kennedy.

A post in the Political Intelligence blog of the Boston Globe provides additional details.

Sirhan is serving a life prison term in Robert Kennedy’s murder.
