A suspended Wisconsin lawyer accused of robbing a bank to pay his expenses has pleaded not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect.

Peter Elliott, 62, entered the revised plea on Thursday, spurring a Waukesha judge to order a mental evaluation, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

Peter Elliott is accused of taking more than $9,500 in the June 12 robbery. According to the criminal complaint, he told police he used the money partly to pay utility bills and other living expenses.

It’s not his only brush with the law. Elliott is scheduled to be sentenced on Oct. 1 after he was charged with siphoning some $2.5 million from his client trust account. He has pleaded guilty to one count of bank fraud in that case.
