A California teen whose parents installed a global positioning device in his car may finally be grateful for their attempt to monitor his driving habits.

Shaun Malone is using a printout from the system to show he was not going 62 mph in a 45 mph zone as a police officer contends, the Associated Press reports. He and his stepfather, retired sheriff’s deputy Roger Rude, argue the printout shows the officer’s radar gun must not have properly clocked Malone’s speed.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that more drivers are using GPS evidence to fight tickets, although the best way to avoid a conviction is to hope the ticketing officer is unable to make it to court.

A Sonoma County traffic commissioner is expected to issue a ruling in Malone’s case within the coming weeks.
