John Fiske, a self described “eco-lawyer” who represents cities suing the agrochemical biotechnology corporation Monsanto, spends his free time rescuing and caring for farm animals on land he owns in an unincorporated section of San Diego County.

He purchased 2.5 acres of property in Elfin Forest last year, the San Diego Union Tribune reports, which includes Fiske’s San Diego Farm Animal Rescue. Fiske is holding an open house in May, so people can visit the horses, hens, goats and pig he rescued.

“My goal is promote the concept of compassion,” says Fiske, who plans to provide educational programs at the ranch. He’d also like to build a network of ranchers and farmers who also want to help rescue animals.

Fiske, 32, became a vegetarian last year, after watching the documentary Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret. Today, he says that there’s a disconnect among people about which animals should be considered pets and which should be consumed.

“Our society has drawn a line between eating cows and pigs and eating dogs and cats, but there’s no real reason for it,” he told the newspaper. “The number of farm animals killed each year is astronomically high,” he said.
